Describe Your Ideal Day For Writing

  • 6:30AM to 11:00AM, first coffee, then setting ambience in my study.
  • If writing in draft mode, I play classical music playing in the background. Helps keep me focused on the creative.
  • If in editing mode, I play movie soundtracks. Mostly strings, violin and cello. (Nothing with lyrics while writing, or I'll end up getting nothing accomplished. I'll be singing along too much.)
  • Ideally, I'll write about 3,500 words in that time frame while working on a project, which is narrowed down to 2,500 words after editing.
  • I often jot down ideas in a little notebook that I carry around or write on a napkin, or anything I can find as a temporary solution.

DO YOU READ A LOT?

  • I do read a lot. Primarily non-fiction throughout the week, and two books of fiction per week, mostly mysteries, espionage, detective novels. Biographies and memoirs are the types of work that I like to read while traveling.

Do you have a favorite book turned into a movie/film?

  • I have a few favorite films, but I'm very fond of films that actually started out as a short story with narrative voice. The Shawshank Redemption is a favorite and was originally a short story.
  • One of my personal favorites is The Legend of 1900, with Tim Roth, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Melanie Thierry. The writing has so many hidden gems and you have to watch it a few times to pick up all the interesting details. I love reading and watching films where foreshadowing is a technique skillfully woven into a redemptive story.
